FERNANDA LAGUNA at the Drawing Center, New York

Balanz Loans

We believe in the circulation of art. We maintain a loan policy that encourages dialogue and the dissemination of the work of the artists included in the collection. On this occasion, the Collection is lending four works by the artist Fernanda Laguna.

The exhibition The Path of the Heart takes the form of a large studio, presenting seventy works that span the artist’s entire career and highlighting her understanding of art as a language that communicates emotions. The exhibition also emphasizes the role of drawings, within a body of work that includes Laguna’s practice not only as a visual artist, but also as a writer, curator, activist, and cultural organizer. According to Laguna, sharing emotional bonds and cultivating community are fundamental to a multifaceted practice. In her words, “Art manifests itself in people; if there are no people, there is no art.”

Since the beginning of her career in the mid-1990s, Fernanda Laguna has charted her own artistic path, creating works through a feminist lens and with a distinctive visual style. Her artworks often incorporate inexpensive or discarded materials, employing a deliberately naïve sensibility.

The exhibition runs from March 10 to May 22, 2022, at the Drawing Center in New York, founded in 1977 by Martha Beck (1938–2014). Located in the SoHo neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, the Drawing Center explores the medium of drawing as primary, dynamic, and relevant to contemporary culture, the future of art, and creative thinking. Its activities are multidisciplinary and broadly historical, encompassing exhibitions, publications, and educational and public programs.
